Posted: Apr 02nd, 2019 Updated: Jan 11, 2021

It's time to take off the mask and show the world who you are.

You’re running for office and that’s a big deal. Use this to your advantage and make a great announcement.

Announcing your run for office is an opportunity to start building followers, creating content, and raising money. All the backend is set-up and it’s time to let people know who you are and your vision to change the world!

The following tips will make sure you have a successful announcement.

Review your personal statement

Your personal statement will get you back to the root of your purpose for running. Finalize what your message is and use your announcement as a time to let people know why they should be interested in your campaign.

Identify your audience

How, where, and the message around your announcement should be determined by the audience you want to reach. Is your goal to excite supporters and activists around a particular issue? Do you want to show political strength to legitimize your campaign or make it more difficult for potential opponents to enter the race? Do you want to get the attention of potential donors or community leaders? Answering this question will help you pick a message, medium (social media, earned media, special event, etc.), and make sure you maximize your opportunities of this important event.

Invite your staff and team

Your announcement day is a great photo opportunity. Choose a nice location and make sure you have your supporters around you if you are giving a public announcement. Remember, you want a picture of supporters standing with you, not just looking at you from the audience. Invite people to stand behind you with your signs when you announce.

Raise some money!

An announcement is a perfect time to raise money. This is the launch of your campaign and you need to springboard yourself forward for the rest of the campaign. It also creates a deadline and urgency for some of your early donors. Ask people to be your first donors, and recognize their early contributions as critical pieces that will help you get your campaign off the ground.

We have also put together three different announcement templates you can use to announce your run for office and raise some money! Download the templates and see what works best for you. You can find those below.

Announcing your run for office successfully is like hitting the ground running. It’s taken some preparation to get to this point and there is still a race ahead of you but you’re now in the middle of it all.
